Some 35 years ago I lived and worked in Indonesia and was fortunate enough to be able to visit Bali on a couple of occasions. I became very interested in the traditional arts of that island. When considering which work of art to use for this project I thought that I would like to copy a traditional Balinese painting.
When I was studying for my level I Understanding Art course, I also made a copy of a painting, at that time an oil painting by Christopher Wood. I found that a very useful exercise as you gain a lot more from trying to copy a work of art rather than just studying it. This was very much the case with this current exercise, where trying to copy the pen and ink drawing taught me a great deal, not just about the technique, but also opened new insights onto composition and the overall effect this has on the painting.
