I have always admired the skill involved in producing marble sculptures without fully realising quite how they were made, so this exercise was really interesting. I had not appreciated that marble can be relatively soft when first quarried and that it hardens over time.
It would seem that fine arts sculpting is one of those techniques where the tools involved have changed very little over time. Power tools may now be available and in use by some people, but I think the vast majority of sculptors would still be doing much of their work with the same type of tool that was used centuries ago.
I found it really interesting researching this technique, to better understand quite how marble sculptures are created.
