Exercise; Implied lines

This exercise is in two parts – the first part is to analyse three existing photographs for implied lines.

The second part of the exercise is to take two photographs that use the following  kinds of implied lines

  • an eye line
  • the extension of a line

For the first of these attention is drawn to the face of the girl because of the eyeline of the performer.

The second photo is to show the extension of a line,

In this photo the lines of the gondolas all point to the church on the island opposite.

What have I learnt from this exercise? This exercise has caused me to think more about composition and how I can use implied lines to draw attention to a particular part of the scene or add a sense of movement to a scene.
